| Brief Analysis of Unit 3 The Land Down Under

I. Brief statements based on the Unit
The title of this unit is The Land Down Under. Perhaps when we see the title at the first sight, we may wonder what it is about. We may even doubt whether it is grammatically wrong. But after consulting it in the dictionary, we learn “down under” means “in Australia ”.
The whole unit gives us detailed information on Australia . After learning the unit, we let the students learn about various aspects of Australia .
Warming up and Listening: It begins with 3 interesting topics and a map to call back what the students already know about Australia , and it can attract the students to go in for the discussion. It has three subjects in Listening. Exercise one asks the students to predict what they will hear on the tape. Exercise two is a chart. Exercise three is to ask the students to know something about how to stay safe, what to bring and how to protect environment. The three exercises try to improve the students' ability of how to predict, how to catch and filter useful information.
Speaking: In speaking part, students are asked to talked about a trip to Australia , using the information from the listening. What the students talk about is all that they are familiar with. They will surely improve their speaking ability in the warm discussion.
Pre-reading: It starts with some interesting questions, which are made to ask the students to predict. And then ask the students to arrange the items ticked in the order in which they expect them to appear in the text. It is meant to improve the students' logic ability. It is also meant to arouse the students' interests to the country. The students are eager to read the text to judge whether their prediction is right or wrong.
Reading : The text is a good material for us to know Australia . It tells us about its make-up, location, foundation and its national flag. It introduces to us about its regions, famous cities, such as Sydney , Canberra , and Melbourne . It gives us information about the first Australians, its history and its culture. It also introduces some Australian English.
Post-reading: It provides some questions to check whether the students understand this passage or not.
Language study: It is made up of two parts--word study and grammar. Word study is a revision of some words and how to give definitions. Grammar reviews the Predicative. Plenty of exercises are given to the students to master them.
Integrating skills: It consists of two parts--a reading material and writing. In the reading material, more information about Australia is offered in the text, including a variety of animals and plants, which can be only found in Australia . It also tells us its climate, size and population. In the course of reading, students will acquire a lot of useful words and expressions. In the Writing task the students are asked to write an article, describing an unusual animal in Australia . Since detailed information is given, it is easy for the students to arrange their article.

2. How to make the students finish the concerned exercises after reading

Step 1 Greeting
Greet the whole class as usual.
Step 2 Lead in
Summarize what they learned during the last period. Ask some students to talk about what they know about Australia .
Step 3 Pre-reading
Tell the students we are going to read a passage about Australia . Before we read the passage, please guess what will be talked in the passage. Ask the students to work in pairs and tick the questions that they think will be answered in the text.
After a while, ask two students to give their answers by guess.
Step 4 Fast-reading
Look at these numbers. Ask the students to read the passage quickly, and find out what happened in these years.

本单元的话题是澳大利亚。具体涉及澳大利亚的地理概况、自然历史、风土人情等。语言技能和语言知识都围绕“澳大利亚”这一中心话题设计展开。其实澳大利亚的文化,建筑,地理特征,名胜古迹,民间传说,民俗特色,政权形式,科学成就都很值得老师引导学生去了解,这对学好英语是有很大的帮助的。 尤其是能够体会领悟澳大利亚的社会特征和人文特点,在学生阅读文章时就能够减少很多障碍。但是内容涉及很广,我们不可能在一个单元的时间内让学生都了解,但是应当鼓励学生上网或去图书馆查阅资料,自主学习。同时也应该提醒学生思考英国,美国 和澳大利亚这三个国家的相似的地方和不同的地方,做一些比较。
