Unit 9 Saving the earth Lesson 34
Introduction of the teaching material
1. This unit is about pollution. It is a focus of the whole world. This lesson is the second one of Unit 9. It is a passage about some serious problems the earth has. It is related to our daily life.
2. This lesson is very helpful for the Ss to improve their reading comprehension ability and spoken English
Teaching aims
1. To make the Ss know that now the earth has a lot of serious problems and people are causing a lot of damage to the earth. And if people don't stop polluting the world or pay more attention, the whole situation will be more and more serious.
2.To make the Ss realize how important and emergent it is to protect our earth and the environment and enable them to love our earth and the nature.
3To give a reinforced practice in the use of the past participle and some useful expressions, such as be fit for; turn … into; in place and so on.

Teaching procedure
Step 1 Revision
• Check the homework exx.
• Orally go over the dialogue
Jackie and Yang pei talked about a conference which Jackie has just been to.
① . What was the conference about?
② . What opinions does Jackie have after attending the conference?
③ , What is the significance of holding such a conference?
Step 2 Lead-in
In a word , our earth is being damaged seriously. As we all know, we can't live without earth, water, and air. But in fact, these are severely damaged. To solve the problems we need to know the causes, i.e. ① what has caused all the damage to the earth, water, and air? ② What are the bad results?
Discuss in 4-groups, and then choose one to report.(notes)
Collect answers and keep notes on the Bb
Step 3 Skimming
Look through the three passages as quickly as possible to figure out the topic sentences of each passage.
• The area of desert in the world is growing every year.
• Air pollution comes from factories, power stations and cars.
• Water pollution is caused by waste from factories and cities.
Step 4 Scanning
Try to find any information needed.
• What are the causes of the ever -growing desert? Why?
• How is chemical rain formed?
• What accidents are mentioned that seriously polluted the air and caused great damage?
• Are oceans able to clean themselves? How about seas and lakes? Any examples?
• What accident may bring on great pollution to seawater?
Deal with each question using pictures to help explain.
Step 5 Post-reading
• Listen and find the places on the map of the world where the damage has happened.
• Summarize the lesson.
